💁‍♀️My name’s Justine and I’m an addict

Hey there Reader,

I tried. I swear. I started reading my real physical book. But the pull of my phone is so strong. I’ll take just one tiny peak to see if the news has changed in the last 5 minutes.

And of course it had. But, let’s be real – this was not an easy week to wean myself from the news.

Let’s get addicted to touching real books again

One thing I noticed when I did manage to immerse myself in my physical books this week, was that I love the feel of my fingertip on the paper as I read down the page.

The touch of the paper could be my new addiction. The slight texture of the paper is so much more satisfying than the electrostatic tingling I feel as I scroll on my phone consuming headlines.

Are addictions contagious?

For sure. We are always on our phones and our kids are always on their devices. It’s a learned behavior and it’s socially contagious.

Let’s get the kids addicted to reading real books. Here’s how:

  1. Put the phone in the drawer and read a real physical book for at least 20 minutes in your kid’s presence.
  2. Put real books and magazines in front of your kid so they start copying you.
  3. Rinse and repeat everyday.

Authors, series, and subscriptions can be addicting

Try to get your kid hooked on an author who has written many books or even better a series of books. Not sure where to start? Here’s a list of favorite authors and books of teachers and children.

Or sign them up to a magazine that comes once a month or more. Did you have a favorite magazine subscription as a kid? Do you think your own child would enjoy them too?

Reply to this email and tell me what was your favorite author or magazine subscription as a kid.

Cheers,

Justine

Hey there Reader, I’m kidding! But seriously what do we do with the kids now that school is out? She got me thinking about my own joy in reading and how lately it’s been harder to just immerse myself in a book because I get so distracted by the digital world around...
